We were tasked with creating a center for MAAME, Inc. (Mobilizing African Mothers through Empowerment) a non-profit organization in Durham, NC. The center serves as a space for mothers to receive support during their pregnancy and the first few months postpartum. The site location is in the Hayti District and will asset the population of low-income women living in the district

Not only will the space be for mothers but for their families and the community. The center works with the natural birthing process where a doula and/or midwife is present. A large demographic of Hayti's District is made up of African American and Latina women, who are more susceptible to the maternal mortality rate. This is due to many issues like the healthcare system running on an inherently racist system (although many physicians & healthcare providers aim to treat all patients equally), a lack of diversity within maternal healthcare & inadequate medical treatment during the birthing project

Key parts of the maternity center that address our clients needs would include a multi-purpose room, daycare & study bar, pantry, cafe, patio, doula & midwife offices, dentist room, lab, birthing & post recovery rooms
